What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a renewable alternative to traditional jet fuel, designed to significantly reduce aviation’s carbon footprint. It is produced from sustainable feedstocks such as waste oils, agricultural residues, or algae, and can be blended with conventional jet fuel for use in existing aircraft engines without modifications. SAF reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels and plays a critical role in decarbonising aviation while maintaining high safety and performance standards. Regulators face the challenge of balancing SAF’s safety and performance standards with scaling production, certification, and infrastructure to meet sustainability goals.
