Course Overview
This course addresses a critical capability gap – the ability to understand climate science and climate risk analysis concepts, identify key climate change drivers and their implications for aviation systems, and translate this information into operationally meaningful risk assessments and adaptation strategies. It equips participants with the skills to integrate climate risk into planning, risk management, and investment processes, supporting the transition to a more future-ready aviation system.
Participants will learn how these revised provisions impact national regulatory frameworks, State Safety Programmes (SSP), and organisational Safety Management Systems (SMS). The workshop blends regulatory explanation with practical examples, case studies, and exercises – supporting a performance‑based, intelligence‑driven approach to safety management.
- Understand key climate science concepts and their implications for aviation systems
- Explore methods to analyse climate hazards, vulnerabilities, and system interdependencies
- Apply climate risk insights to strengthen aviation planning, operations, and investment decisions
What is Climate Risk and Adaptation?
Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of climate hazard-related disruptions that directly affect aviation infrastructure, operations, and strategic planning. ICAO Member States and stakeholder organisations are expressing increasing concerns about the potential implications of climate change for aviation systems and the growing need to strengthen climate resilience.
Building adaptive capacity requires an understanding of the climate hazard trends and climate change scenarios, and how these translate into impacts across the aviation system. This understanding is essential for identifying exposed and/or vulnerable elements, recognising interdependencies, and revealing gaps in existing risk mitigation strategies. As global and national policies move towards mandating climate resilient approaches to infrastructure development and risk governance, aviation professionals need the knowledge and tools to analyse, interpret and prioritise planning and investment decisions, considering the complexity and underlying uncertainties.
This course is designed for aviation professionals seeking a structured introduction to climate hazard risk, trends and related implications.
This would include managers responsible for physical climate risk, emergency response, and resilience planning or infrastructure strategy. In addition, risk managers aiming to integrate climate considerations into existing frameworks, as well as sustainability, planning, and operations teams seeking a cross-functional understanding of climate risk and resilience.
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand climate hazards and emerging climate change trends
- Describe what is the impact of climate change to their organisation
- Provide an overview of evolving international guidelines, regulations, and best practices
- Familiarise themselves with existing approaches to climate risk analysis and how to undertake a climate change risk assessment
- Translate course insights into actionable next steps for their organisation
- Communicate climate risk insights effectively across organisational levels
- Foster the foundations of a climate risk culture
- Integrate climate risk considerations into the existing risk management process
- Recognise opportunities to enhance climate resilience and align action with broader sustainability goals
This training course will include the following topics and focus on actionable steps for their organisation, strengthen climate risk communication and culture, integrate climate considerations into existing risk management processes, and identify opportunities to enhance resilience and advance broader sustainability goals
- Climate Hazards
- Emerging Climate Trends
- The Evolving Regulatory Landscape
