What is Barrier Modelling?

Barrier modelling is a visual way of presenting the possible causes that could lead to a hazard developing into an undesirable event. Barrier modelling presents the possible effects of this happening and the barriers/controls that either reduce the likelihood of the event occurring, or reduce the impact of the event should it happen.

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide delegates with a foundation detailing what a barrier model is and its role in the regulatory framework Annex 13 Amendment 17, which refers to the classification of serious incidents and how remaining barriers between the event and an undesirable outcome were left intact, need to be considered.

Delegates will have the opportunity to compare and contrast different methodologies and gain a deeper understanding of the role of barrier modelling in risk management. By the end of the course delegates will also be able to visualise the concept of barrier efficacy and how important it is to have a barrier model as a live document that requires constant review.

This course is suitable for anyone who requires a generic overview of barrier modelling in the aviation context.

This training course will include the following topics:

  • Introduction to Barrier Models
  • Creating a Barrier Model – using BowTie software
  • Barrier Model Applications
  • Maintaining a Barrier Model and Safety Performance Indicators

By the end of this course, delegates will demonstrate knowledge of the following through group discussion and syndicate exercises:

  • Understand the concept of barrier modelling as outlined in ICAO Annex 13 Amendment 17
  • Present an overview of different barrier modelling techniques
  • The role of barrier modelling plays in risk management
  • Best practice when creating an effective barrier model
  • How barrier models can be used to create meaningful Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs)

Delegates should have a basic knowledge of Safety Management Systems.
