Why is developing Space Industry Safety important?

Developing Space Industry Safety is crucial for ensuring that space operations are conducted without undue risk to people, equipment, or the environment. It involves implementing key safety principles outlined in the UK Space Industry Regulations 2021. These principles help operators establish effective safety systems, create a positive safety culture, and prevent failures by learning from past incidents.

Course Overview

The UK Space Industry Regulations 2021 embodies the objective of encouraging safe practice in the UK Space Industry, with the intent of using established principles.  What are these principles, and how should they be applied?  To answer these questions, the course introduces standard industry safety principles and applies them through presentations and exercises, to understand the underlying value.

The course draws on the UK CAA Space Team’s own learning, together with experience and observation from their space industry monitoring activities.  The course comprises of a two-day classroom event, delivered by UK CAA Space Regulatory Specialists, and will include Process Safety and Safety Culture training.

This course is suitable for individuals working within the Space Industry, both in industry and regulatory roles, seeking an introduction to System and Process Safety.  The course is applicable to both UK and International operators under the UK CAA license and those who wish to gain an understanding of how to develop effective Space Industry Safety.

This training course will include the following topics:

  • Recognition of Process Safety, Safety Barrier Principles, and the role of Industry Memory
  • Relationship between Leadership, Safety Culture, and effective Process Safety.
  • Concepts of Systemic Issues, Latent Errors, and Active Failures.
  • Importance of learning from industry failures in preventing failures from underlying issues.
  • The need to develop Soft Skills in parallel with these principles for effective results.
  • Value in collecting, analysing, and sharing safety data.
  • Understanding why a robust safety culture also drives business success.

Delegates attend a two-day classroom event, where they can develop their skills in practice through interactive face-to-face presentations, group work and practical exercises.

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of how to:

  • Implement the requirements of the UK Space Regulations 2021 such that effective safety principles become established.
  • Develop and apply System and Process Safety approaches within their organisations.
  • Understand the value of these approaches in ensuring effective Process Safety management.
  • Recognise the relationship between these principles and generating a positive Safety Culture.
  • Learn from space and other industry failures to recognise how underlying issues create contributory causes.
  • Leverage the learning to cultivate both effective organisational Safety Culture and Process Safety.

Participants should be familiar with the Space environment in the context of the course.

Risk Monitoring & Safety Performance

Risk monitoring and safety performance in aviation involves continuous assessment, analysis, and improvement of safety practices within the industry. It entails the systematic collection and analysis of data related to incidents, accidents, and near-misses, as well as the identification of emerging risks and trends.

Safety Management Systems – Principles and Applications

A Safety Management System (SMS) within any aviation organisation provides a systematic approach to managing safety. For an SMS to be effective, there must be the necessary organisational structures, accountabilities, responsibilities, policies and procedures.  An effective SMS should enable an organisation to identify hazards, assess risks and can be the mechanism to continuously improve safety performance.
