Last week, our Managing Director, Maria Rueda spoke about the importance of gender equality, diversity and inclusion at the first ICAO Global Aviation Gender Summit in Cape Town, South Africa.
Co-organised by ICAO in close collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the summit provided a unique opportunity to support and advance gender equality and empowerment of women in the global aviation sector.
Maria joined a panel of six other industry professionals to discuss barriers and enablers to attract and retain women in the aviation sector. The hour and a half session explored the possible courses of action in creating an inclusive organisational culture that supports the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the aviation industry.
Maria presented the UK CAA’s new Diversity and Inclusion plan to an auditorium of ICAO Member State representatives from across the globe. Maria explained how the UK CAA is working to achieve a better gender balance and be a modern employer that attracts, develops and retains great people who can give their best.
Speaking after the event, Maria said, “Gender balance is important for the future of the aviation sector. The UK CAA is making some key steps through our Diversity and Inclusion plan to encourage a more gender equal organisation that will, in turn, help inspire more female professionals to pursue a career in aviation and reach more senior positions. I hope we can see the day when we don’t have to think of someone as a man or a woman, but just as an aviation professional, encouraging the next generation of aviation professionals”.
