Social enterprise CAA International (CAAi) has announced its continued backing of the UK’s Resilient Pilot Programme by providing funding for the third consecutive year. This year, the programme will introduce the Continuous Resilience Development (CRD) initiative to Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) in the UK that offer modular Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) training, equipping them with the tools to instil resilience philosophies.
The CRD programme will be integrated into modular ATPL training routes, including those offered by FlyFair/RP, helping to address the anticipated pilot shortages. As part of this initiative, instructors will receive training on the principles of resilience and the underlying philosophies that support Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA). The programme will also play a pioneering role in introducing the CBTA philosophy to General Aviation ATOs. Additionally, instructors will receive training in Instructor and Evaluator Competencies, ensuring high-quality, standardised training across the industry.
This announcement underscores the ongoing partnership between Resilient Pilot and CAAi. In 2023, CAAi funded 20 places in the Resilient Pilot Programme, which included instructor training on the resilience philosophy, resulting in a 12% increase in participant resilience. This approach improved the trainees’ skills, engagement, performance, and mental health, while also enriching the quality of instructor-led learning. The previous year, CAAi funded 20 pilots on the programme, who received virtual mentoring, coaching, and training to build continuous personal and professional resilience, in line with CBTA methodologies. Data showed that these participants improved their average competency scores from 3.2 to 3.9 within six months, with six pilots securing employment as First Officers during that period.
Silke Buckley, Head of Training at CAA International, commented:
“As a social enterprise committed to fostering positive change within aviation, we are proud to continue supporting the Resilient Pilot Programme. This year, our focus on training instructors in the resilience philosophy offers a meaningful way to expand these benefits across the broader training ecosystem. Collaborating with smaller General Aviation ATOs presents an exciting opportunity to prepare for the influx of future trainees while ensuring that CBTA methodologies are embedded into pilot training at every level.”
Stuart Beech, CEO at Resilient Pilot, added:
“We are once again delighted to have received funding and continuous support from CAA International working towards our common objectives of enhancing training and development through CBTA within the industry, particularly with our partners FlyFair and the associated ATO’s. We have a great opportunity to introduce CBTA to smaller GA ATO’s equipping their Instructor and Evaluator’s IE’s with the tools and effective methodologies to ensure we establish additional effective pathways for people to become capable, confident and competent future airline pilots.”
