Background
Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust approached CAAi to look at two sites on their behalf to see if improvements could be made in the transportation arrangements of critically ill children.
Requirements
To advise on a proposed surface-level helicopter landing area at the Embrace Yorkshire & Humber Infant & Children’s Transport Site and to carry out a Feasibility Study of the main Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Approach
- UK CAA experts visited both sites to carry out an assessment and produced a Feasibility Report for each project advising the Trust on the most suitable location for a Helipad.
- Provided explanations of aviation requirements for both surface level and rooftop.
Benefits
Proposed a rooftop heliport at Sheffield Children’s Hospital to provide airlifted patients direct access to the A&E Department and confirmed that the surface level helipad will be suitable at the Embrace site.
This exercise has allowed the Board to understand the operational and aviation safety requirements of both sites so that they can make informed decisions on the cost implications and the benefits of the helicopter landing areas before committing to either scheme
